Canopy, through text and image, references a category of woodland wildflowers known as "Spring ephemerals” native to deciduous forests. These plants spend a brief few weeks above ground each year after the snow-melt, but before the canopy trees leaf-out, blocking out the sunlight to the understory of the forest. These quiet teachers wait in the dark of the earth for their calculated chance to seize their one necessity, to produce seeds and sugars – to do the work with the time they are given.
